Mexicans use 200% more smart home devices than in 2020

Spotlights, cameras, voice assistants or even household appliances are beginning to gain more relevance in Mexico. According to Statista, there are currently 7 billion connected devices in the region and they expect that by 2025, in Latin America, there will be 22 billion smart devices. This means a growth of 200% compared to 2020.

The trend has permeated the country since 2020, when the covid-19 pandemic forced many users to have a more focused approach to their homes, according to Bruno D’Alleva, Ring’s director for Mexico and Latin America. In addition, he sees that the interest in having connected homes is directly related to the need for them to be more secure.

“In the region, users are using smart cameras to have a closer monitoring of pets, but also of their homes, since many are returning to the offices and changing the habits that they had inside their homes, they made them more their own” D’Alleva noted.

A survey by Ring pointed out that 50% of Mexicans said that they have a Wi-Fi device installed in their home that makes their home smarter. Respondents pointed out that voice service (42%), smart bulbs (21%) and security camera (16%) are the most used in home automation.

While it predicts that the main use that will be given to this type of device is surveillance, it estimates that 17.5 billion devices will be used for this purpose in Latin America alone, by 2026.

Ring’s survey found that people who haven’t yet purchased a device would do so for two reasons: keeping their home safe and monitoring their pets when they’re away from home, at work or traveling.

“The security and smart home category in this sense has a lot to grow in the adoption of new users and the launch of new solutions. Although safety is one of the main reasons, other uses and needs arise, such as comfort, convenience and pet care”, points out the spokesperson for the smart home company.

The challenges in the deployment of this sector

One of the challenges identified by D’Alleva is that, in the case of smart doorbells, the insecurity that exists in some cities in the region means that many users do not want to purchase equipment of this type.

“It is true that in the region we suffer from this issue, both that a team is stolen and that it is mistreated. However, there are from accessories to protect it, to guarantees at the time of purchase where it is possible to replace the product if it is violated, “said the brand spokesman.

In addition to the security issue, one of the limitations they identified is the lack of connection in the country.

“98% stated that they would like to venture into making their home smart, while the rest indicated that their main impediments are the lack of WiFi in their home; the complexity in the operation; high costs and protection of the privacy of your home ”says the report.

And only 21% said they have a security device installed in their home, although some of the solutions are more traditional:

● Security camera (44%)

● Video intercom (16%)

● Gate automation (7%)

● Others: intelligent sheet metal, security fittings and monitoring systems.
