Formula 1 car auctions are not very common, and even less so if we are referring to legendary single-seaters or those that have achieved a certain level of success. However, every once in a while, one of these vehicles comes up for sale.

The Monterrey Motor Week (California) will witness an event like no other for motor fans. RM Sotheby will organize its traditional auction between August 18 and 20 , and will make up to 189 vehicles of all kinds available to buyers.

The auction will feature cars that predate the First World War, but also a 2008 Lamborghini Reventon , as well as various race cars: Jeff Gordon ‘s NASCAR car that he drove between 2002 and 2004, or the 1994 Nissan Skyline that participated in the Japanese Super GT.

However, in all auctions there is a piece more special than the rest and that stands out almost without trying. On this occasion, the jewel in the crown is the only Formula 1 single-seater that will be part of the event: Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F300 , specifically chassis 187, the most special of all.

Other F300 chassis have already been put up for sale, such as the single-seater with which he lost the 1998 world championship against Mika Hakkinen, but it remains in the shadow of the specification that a lucky man will be able to add to his collection.

This chassis is the only one with which the seven-time world champion remained undefeated in 1998. He took part in four races with it: the Canadian, French, British and Italian Grands Prix, and won all four, although he could only achieve pole position at Monza.

After this, the car was taken as a reserve to some races, but it never returned to the circuits. It is the only Ferrari chassis that has been used in more than three races and has remained unbeatable.

The Ferrari F300 to be auctioned is equipped with the original 3.0-litre V10 engine, which produces 800 horsepower at 17,500 rpm.

The car remained in Ferrari’s possession until 1999, when it was sold to the previous owner, including all bodywork, tires and engine. Since then, no changes have been made to the car, so it comes fitted with the low downforce rear wing that the Maranello team decided to use at the 1998 Italian GP at Monza .

As usual, whoever wants to get hold of this historical piece will have to scratch their pockets. RM Sotheby expects the Ferrari F300 with chassis 187 to fetch between $6 million and $8 million (approximately €5.8 million to €7.8 million).
