The 2021 season in terms of the fight for the championship was closed at the last Emilia Romagna Grand Prix , a race whose outcome Joan Mir saw from the Suzuki box, after suffering a fall in the early stages. That, coupled with finishing eighth in the previous race, in Austin , puts last year’s champion in jeopardy of finishing on the final podium overall this year, where he sits right now.
After almost two weeks of break, the Mallorcan rider made an assessment of how he was facing the weekend in Portugal , the second time that the championship competes this year in Portimao after the visit in April, in which the Suzuki rider finished third.
“I’m fine, with the batteries charged and wanting to start the weekend on a circuit that, a priori, I like; and where I think our bike works well. I want to start and get rid of the thorn of both last races”, said the Suzuki rider at first this Thursday in the previous one.
However, for Mir the season has not turned out, far from it, as he expected. He immediately gave way to his true feeling, with two rounds remaining in the championship.
“Honestly, I want the season to be over. I would like to finish in the top three, we still have the option of being able to show what we couldn’t do in Misano , for a thousand things, but there we couldn’t get our full potential”, he explained. frankly.
“I would like to be able to attack and fight for the runner-up position, that would ensure us to be third, which is what we have to do and not have to be on the defensive,” he added in a sporting key as an objective for this final stretch.
After being champion in 2020 and keeping options for the title until a couple of races ago, Mir hopes for a cleaner outcome.
“The truth is that I did not expect to have to do these things at the end of the season. To be honest, I will not look so much if I finish the season second, third or fourth in the World Cup. What I want is to recover from the bad feelings we had in the last few races, especially at Misano, with so many crashes. It was a disaster,” the #36 stressed.
“I have done a reset at home and I think it has gone well for me. Now, two more little races and to prepare for the next season”, settled the Spaniard.
