What happened in the free practice 1 of the Monaco GP 2022 of F1?

Leclerc set the pace early on, setting a 1m17.993s on medium tyres, but was soon overtaken by Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo ( McLaren ) and Verstappen as the track improved. Leclerc raised the bar again in 1m15.883s as times continued to drop, and Sainz beat him by just 0.001s.

Leclerc and Verstappen, on hard tyres, traded for top spot before Leclerc went straight into Santa Devota . Verstappen posted a 1m15.327s at the time.

The session was red-flagged after 20 minutes when Mick Schumacher’s Haas slowed at La Rascasse and stopped at the pitlane entrance with an MGU-K failure, causing chaos with the cars they could not pass to pit lane.

After the restart, Norris took the lead despite still not being at 100% health, with a 1m15.301s and then a 1m15.056s with mediums, leading a McLaren one-two at mid-session ahead of Ricciardo.

Verstappen switched to mids and took the lead with a 1m4.712s, 0.188s ahead of Pérez. Verstappen then suffered a huge block and went straight into Santa Devota, while Leclerc jumped into second and Sainz saw traffic at the Pool spoil a potential fastest lap for him.

Leclerc then moved to a 1m14.531s, 0.07s ahead of Sainz before Pérez moved up to second, 0.039s off the fastest time. Verstappen was fourth, ahead of Norris, Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) and Ricciardo. George Russell (Mercedes) finished eighth, ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who did his time on softs, and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.

Kevin Magnussen (Haas) and Pérez also took a trip to Santa Devota.

Valtteri Bottas did not set a time due to a gearbox problem.
