The Polcevera Viaduct of Highway 10 in the northern Italian coastal city of Genoa collapsed in 2018, killing 43 people. The public prosecutor’s office is now bringing charges against 59 suspects.

Genoa – The public prosecutor’s office in Genoa, Italy, has brought charges against 59 suspects and two companies in the case of the “Ponte Morandi” motorway bridge that collapsed in 2018.

A pensioner would also have seen that there were problems on the bridge, the “Corriere della Sera” quoted a public prosecutor from the hearing on Wednesday as saying on Thursday.

The Polcevera Viaduct on Highway 10 in the northern Italian coastal city collapsed on August 14, 2018, killing 43 people. Hundreds of people living below were made homeless. In August 2020, a new building called the San Giorgio Bridge was inaugurated.

Victims’ Association: It has become quiet

The judiciary accuses the 59 suspects and two companies of, among other things, multiple negligent homicides and violations of road safety, making false statements and failing to perform official duties. Allegations circulated in the media that defects in the bridge had been ignored.

“We family members are eagerly waiting for the path to continue,” wrote the chairwoman of a victims’ association on Thursday. The feeling of the relatives is that the case has gone quiet and the seriousness of what happened is being underestimated.

According to the “Corriere della Sera”, the civil parties and the defense would still have the opportunity to express themselves in the coming days. Between the end of March and the beginning of April, the investigating judge must now decide which accused will be tried. dpa
