MotoGP establishes for 2027 the change to 100% sustainable fuels

The MotoGP world championship and the International Federation (FIM) announced this Wednesday their intention to lead the transformation from fossil fuels to one hundred percent sustainable fuels.

In a press release, MotoGP explains that “it is a global platform with the power to lead the evolution in both the motorcycle and mobility industries. With a unique position as one of the most popular and technologically advanced sports in the world, being a racing ‘laboratory’ driven by innovation and development”.

The roadmap agreed with the manufacturers participating in the championship establishes two key dates to achieve sustainability in this section: “By 2024, the fuel in all MotoGP classes will have a minimum of 40% non-fossil origin, while by 2027, fuel in all categories will be of 100% non-fossil origin,” says the joint FIM and Dorna announcement.

In a key sector for global mobility, with more than 60 million motorcycles sold worldwide each year, the switch to non-fossil fuels would have a major impact on reducing emissions.

“MotoGP will become a platform for the development of these fuels, with each manufacturer working with their supplier to develop their own fuel. The development of multiple fuels will ensure that technology and knowledge reach consumers’ motorcycles and pumps in the Without a single producer, the initiative guarantees an unprecedented global impact,” they say.

The objective of the initiative is that these fuels can be used in conventional engines and be synthetic.

“They can be used in a standard internal combustion engine and will be created in the laboratory, using components from a carbon capture scheme, or derived from municipal waste or non-food biomass, thus achieving significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions in relation to with gasoline of fossil origin,” continues the statement.

“Fuel suppliers will progressively introduce the use of renewable energies in the production of their fuel.”

While in MotoGP each manufacturer will work with its own partner, such as Repsol, Shell, Elf, ETS or Petronas, among others, in the Moto2 and Moto3 classes they will continue with a single supplier that must introduce a partially sustainable fuel in 2024, to finish reaching 100% in 2027.
