MotoGP – "I didn't understand the penalty", said Bezzecchi after Thailand

Marco Bezzecchi left a time of 1.29.671 in Buriram written for the record book, the time with which he achieved pole position at the Thai Grand Prix and which is the fastest lap ever completed on that track. For the young rookie and his team, the VR46 , the feat achieved on Saturday becomes the first of these characteristics achieved in the premier class, an anniversary that was celebrated in style in the Italian garage.

However, the joy collided with the frustration of Sunday’s race, in which Luca Marini, the other member of the team, added his first crash of the season in the race, and Bezzecchi went from starting first to finishing 16th, outside the points.

The one from Rimini , explosive and very fast in the dry, did not find the sensations in the delicate conditions in which the race had to be faced after a monumental waterspout.

And not only that, after the lights went out, Bezzecchi took the lead of the race and gained a few tenths of an advantage, first over Pecco Bagnaia and, already on the second lap of the race, over Jack Miller. But Race Direction made the decision to force the guy from the VR46 to give up his position by going off the track and shortening the run-off after the start, a maneuver that, at first glance, seemed inevitable.

“First of all I have to say that I didn’t understand very well why I received that penalty, because Martin touched me twice before the first corner and took me off the track, so I had nowhere to go,” Bezzecchi lamented, recalling that , at the first corner, arrived parallel to Jorge Martín, who started second on the grid, and opened to the outside to avoid touching.

“I really couldn’t disappear to avoid crashing. I didn’t understand the penalty,” he insisted.

But the Italian rider did not want to find excuses for his bad race, sticking only to that moment of the race, since once the place was given to Miller, on the third lap, Marco remained in second place for a couple of laps, but in by lap six he was passed by three riders, and halfway through the race he was already out of the top 10.

“Even without the penalty, the result couldn’t have been any different because I didn’t feel good on the bike at all,” he admitted honestly.

“When there was less water on the track, from the fifth lap, I started to suffer a lot with the front end. I lost the front part in every corner, so it was very difficult for me to be faster.”

Despite the enormous success of achieving pole position, ending the weekend in such a way erased any sign of joy on the rider’s face.

“Obviously I’m disappointed after a very good weekend and some practice where I was very fast in the dry. But that’s the way it is, we can’t control the weather conditions.”

Despite the enormous disappointment that dragged, Bezzecchi did not want to say goodbye to Thailand without remembering the good of the Grand Prix.

“The weekend was positive because I was very fast and I showed that I was quite good in the dry. Unfortunately I was not so good in the rain, but the positive thing is that we worked very well and made a lot of progress between Friday and Saturday. I got my first pole, which is always nice, but there is nothing positive to take from the day that matters most”, referring to Sunday’s race.
