MotoGP intends to introduce Saturday sprint races in 2023

This is an initiative that Formula 1 introduced last year in three events on its calendar (Great Britain, Monza and Brazil), and given its good acceptance among fans, it will be applied again in 2022, in this case in Imola and Austria ( already disputed), and in Brazil, in mid-November.

With the precedent of the impact that this measure had in F1, Dorna, the promoter of the MotoGP World Championship, has already contacted the constructors that are part of the event to put this possibility on the table, which will be discussed at the meeting of the Grand Prix Commission scheduled for this Friday, at the Red Bull Ring .

Unlike what happens in F1, the idea is to change the nature of all grand prix weekends, and introduce a short 'sprint' race in each of them. Although there are still details to be ironed out, most builders are in favor of such a move.

These short races would have a total distance of just over half of the events taking place on Sunday, and the intention is to award half of the points as well.

In the absence of defining more specifically what the exact format would be, everything indicates that Sunday's starting grid would come from a qualifying session that would have nothing to do with the result of that previous race – another variation on the F1 plan. –. In addition, one of the free practice sessions would be suspended, as well as the warm up on Sunday.
