MotoGP | Jarvis: "Viñales fights against his own demons

The traumatic departure of the boy from Roses (Girona) materialized in Austria, and was one of the hottest points of the course, informatively speaking. In a first impulse, on Monday after the celebration of the Dutch Grand Prix, Viñales announced the resignation of the second year of the contract that he still had to fulfill in 2022 .

With the holidays over, the first appointment in Spielberg ended fatally for the Catalan, who completed the last two laps of the race at the back of the pack and driving erratically. Yamaha analyzed the data it had on those last kilometers and considered the attitude of Viñales unacceptable, who was suspended with a view to the second test that was held at the Red Bull Ring.

The #12 did not get on an M1 anymore, since the tuning fork company and the rider announced the termination of their relationship with immediate effect – at Silverstone it was Cal Crutchlow who replaced him.

Days later, Aprilia made public the signing of Viñales for 2022, although Mack made his debut earlier (Aragón) and took part in the last six stops on the calendar, already clad in Noale’s house suit.

One of the key figures in this unpleasant process was Lin Jarvis, who, as director of Yamaha in the MotoGP World Championship, had to resolve the conflict.

Quite a contrast that the executive has experienced in this 2021, which has seen how one side of the workshop of the official team exploded with emotion for the title of Fabio Quartararo, while his neighbor found no other way out than a change of scenery.

For the Briton, the personality of the two riders has a lot to do with how they have managed this season.

“I think Maverick is a much more complicated person than Fabio. He has the same raw talent as Fabio, but he has a harder time being consistent. That is a sign of his character, which is characterized by ups and downs,” Jarvis told Motorsport.com .

The month and a half that passed between the Dutch Grand Prix (June 27) and the second round in Austria (August 15) was not an easy time for the Yamaha boss, who hired Viñales in 2017 as one of the youngsters with the most talent on the grid, but who never managed to find the formula that would allow him to meet the expectations generated. In Jarvis’s opinion, Quartararo’s explosive emergence and strong performance accelerated events.

“With Maverick we always said that we knew he had the potential, and I think this year he could have achieved the same as Fabio (the title). In 2020, Fabio won three races in the satellite team and he, with the factory team, only one. He soon learned how fast Quartararo was. I think that Viñales is still fighting his own demons, and that is something that only he can solve. Only he can manage his mind and his life, “says the head of the Japanese training.
