The case caused horror: an 87-year-old wheelchair user was stabbed to death in London. Charges have now been brought against the suspect.

LONDON – Police in London have issued a preliminary charge of murder in the case of a man stabbed to death in his electric wheelchair.

The 44-year-old man is accused of stabbing 87-year-old Thomas O’Halloran to death in the west of the British capital on Tuesday. The case caused great outrage.

The publication of a mug shot from a surveillance camera quickly led to success. Police arrested the suspect on Thursday. He was due to be brought before the magistrate on Friday. Scotland Yard said no other people were being sought in connection with the case. The victim’s family has since been notified and asks that their privacy be respected.

Knife violence has long been recognized as a major problem in Britain and particularly in London. The victims are often teenagers or young men.

Most recently, the homicides in London had piled up. Since last Saturday alone, six people have lost their lives in the British capital. London Mayor Sadiq Khan sees the heat wave, the school holidays and the longer daylight as reasons for the accumulation, as he told the radio station LBC on Thursday. Overall, however, violent and property crimes in the capital have declined since last year, according to the Labor politician. dpa
