Mysterious animal discovered off the Italian coast: “Special photo” causes a stir

A rare animal was discovered off the holiday island of Elba in Italy. A photo of the deceased shark causes a lot of excitement on Facebook.

Elba / Kassel – A truly rare find has been made by a marine team off the coast of the Italian island of Elba. We are talking about an animal called “Oxynotus Centrina”, perhaps known to some people by the more common name “spotted sea sow”. The creature in question was a species of shark belonging to the pig shark genus.

The animal was discovered on August 19, but it was only in the past few days that the news spread at breakneck speed. The photo that the Isola d’Elba App posted on Facebook at the beginning of the month seemed particularly fascinating. The only downer: the fish was recovered dead from the waters.

Animal discovered off Italy: the spotted sea sow is threatened with extinction

In English, the fish is also called “rough shark” because this type of shark has a very rough skin. In the German-speaking area, there is also the nickname “grunting shark”, as the animals make noises that are somewhat reminiscent of the grunting of pigs. The sea sow occurs mainly in the eastern Atlantic, in the Black Sea and in the Mediterranean area. But the animal has also been sighted in the northern North Sea.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the spotted sea sow, which lives at depths between 100 and 700 meters, is threatened with extinction. On the menu of the sea creatures there are mainly poly-bristles and syringes, as well as bony fish, crustaceans and echinoderms. However, the animal is harmless to humans.

Facebook post from Italy causes a stir – animal had already died

After Italian naval workers discovered the spotted sea sow, they placed the animal in the care of the port authorities. There the find was examined more closely. A photo of the almost mysterious discovery has now been shared over 800 times on Facebook, and the post was also commented on more than 500 times.

However, not all Facebook users are happy about the contribution. One user asks in horror: “Was it really necessary to fish it and then publish it?” However, the Facebook page emphasized that the sea sow was already dead when it was discovered. They just wanted to share this “special photo”. What is certain is that the story has attracted a lot of attention. (Nail Akkoyun) * hna.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.

Anglers also made a curious find near Göttingen *: In a lake they discovered a turtle that was stuck in a huge catfish. Any help came too late for both animals.
