Nannen Prize: "Zeit" reporter wins in the supreme discipline

Hamburg (dpa) – Journalist Xifan Yang won the Nannen Prize 2021 for her “Zeit” report on Chinese nursing staff in a German senior citizens’ home.

She received the award on Tuesday in the supreme discipline (Egon Erwin Kisch Prize for the best report) of the renowned journalist prize. The title of the report is: “The envoy of Confucius”. The award ceremony was broadcast live on the internet, and the winner was connected by video.

The Hamburg publishing house Gruner + Jahr and the magazine “Stern” founded by Henri Nannen (1913-1996) have been donating the award since 2005. The Nannen Prize is one of the most important awards for media professionals in Germany.

A number of changes have been made to the award for this year’s award: journalists were also able to win for TV, radio and podcast contributions. In January, Gruner + Jahr announced: “From now on, the Nannen Prize will honor outstanding journalistic achievements of all kinds. Regardless of whether they are published in traditional media or on digital platforms, in printed or spoken words, in images, graphically or cross-media Formats. “

There were also new categories. For the first time, a prize was awarded in the “Republic” category. The journalist Daniel Deckers convinced the jury with his reporting in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” on the subject of sexual abuse by clergy of the Catholic Church. The category honors projects that render an exceptional journalistic service to the public.

The second new category is “Story of the Year” and was awarded for a video contribution. The science journalist Mai-Thi Ngyuen-Kim presented the article “Corona is just starting” on her YouTube channel Mailab / Funk, together with her team Lars Dittrich and Melanie Gath. Ngyuen-Kim has been honored several times for her reporting on the Corona crisis. The YouTube video saw millions.

In the “Local” category, Stefan Proetel from “Mannheimer Morgen” won for his report “The business of Bundestag member Nikolas Löbel”.

A group of journalists won the award in the “Investigation” category for an article about those involved in the poison attack on the Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, which appeared in “Spiegel” (in cooperation with “Bellingcat”, “CNN” and “The Insider”). The group included: Roman Dobrokhotov, Matthias Gebauer, Christo Grozev, Roman Lehberger, Fidelius Schmid, Jörg Diehl and Christian Esch. The title of the article: “These are the men who should kill Navalny”.

The winners of the special award had been known for a few days. The entertainers Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf received the award from the magazine “Stern” for their two special programs in the ProSieben program on the situation of refugees in Camp Moria and the problem of everyday sexism. The production team and the author Sophie Passmann, who contributed to the contributions, were also honored with this prize.
