A national Hanukkah Menorah is lit on the White House grounds on the Ellipse every December during the eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the military victory of the Jewish Maccabees over Syrian oppression more than 2,000 years ago. The event features musical performances and fun for the whole family. During Hanukkah, Jews around the world celebrate the miracle of the light that burned for eight days from a single day of oil found in the Temple. A Hanukkah candle is lit the first night, and an additional candle is lit each successive night.

The holiday is a celebration of religious freedom and hope.
