Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, with an urban sprawl containing a population of more than 800,000. However, the popular city center feels much quieter than you would expect from a city if it were this size and there are not many bus and train stations that have Madrid and Barcelona. Still, it is worth learning what to do to make your arrival easier.
Buses from Valencia airport
If your final destination is not Valencia, you may not need to come to the city to catch your bus. There are buses from Valencia to Alicante, Benidorm, Denia, Jávea and Gandia. Check bus schedules and buy tickets at Movelia.es or read more about transfers to Valencia airport .
The metro from Valencia airport to the city center starts around 5:30 am, with the last train just before midnight.
Get there
Getting to Valencia was made much easier when the high-speed AVE train was extended to Valencia, with the popular Madrid-Valencia route taking just 90 minutes (unfortunately, the AVE has not yet connected Barcelona to Valencia ). Anyway, the train is usually the fastest way to the city and, although the AVE and normal trains run at different stations, they are a short walk away.
Exploring the region
Like most big cities in Spain, Valencia has a local Cercanías train service, which is good for reaching some of the smaller towns close to the city, including Buñol (for Tomatina Tomato Fight ), Requena and Sagunt.
North Station
The North Station (Estacio del Nord in Valencian, the local language) is the main train in Valencia and is located next to the bullring.
- Where is? Right in the center of the city on Calle Xativa 24.
- To travel to: slow trains to Barcelona, Cuenca and Madrid, as well as Albacete, Tortosa and Cartagena. This station serves long-distance and regional trains. It also serves lines C-1, C-2, C-5 and C-6 in Cercanías, or commuter trains.
Valencia Joaquin Sorolla high-speed train station
The high-speed AVE train arrives in Valencia here, not far from the Estación del Norte station (it is about 800 meters).

- To travel to: Madrid, Barcelona, Cuenca and some trains from Alicante.
Valencia bus station
The bus is usually cheaper, sometimes much cheaper, than taking the train. But the station is not so convenient to get to.

- As this is the main bus station, you can reach the most popular domestic destinations as well as many international ones.
