New Corona rules in the hardware store: What will change in August at Hornbach, Obi and Co.

The number of corona cases and the incidences in Germany continue to rise. New rules have been in effect for DIY stores since August 1, 2021. What is important when shopping.

Frankfurt – Sometimes the hardware stores were closed, sometimes they were open. The Corona * pandemic, including countermeasures such as lockdowns, have also shaken retailers badly in recent months. However, DIY stores such as Obi, Hornbach or Hagebau are currently allowed to open under certain conditions. The corona situation in Germany has eased compared to spring.

But threateningly dark corona clouds are gathering on the pandemic horizon. The corona incidence in Germany is increasing again *, now there is even a mandatory test for travelers returning from Sunday * (01.08.2021). What does this mean for retail? The corona rules for hardware stores had already changed on July 1st.

Corona rules in hardware stores: negative tests, stricter admission rules

The nationwide Corona emergency brake expired on June 30 and was not extended. The federal states thus have sovereignty over the corona measures again. In other words: each federal state decides for itself which rules are imposed or issued.

In Lower Saxony, for example, stricter rules apply in counties with a 7-day incidence of over 50. This is what the step-by-step plan wants. There applies to the retail trade (including the hardware stores):

  • A negative corona test must be presented for a sales area of over 200 square meters.
  • Shops that are not part of the basic supply and have less than 800 square meters of retail space also need at least 20 square meters per person.
  • With a sales area of over 800 square meters, this area must even be 40 square meters per person.

Corona rules at Obi, Hagebau, Hornbach and Co: What DIY store customers need to know

In Bavaria, a distinction is currently made between two levels. Here, the corona rules are based on an incidence of under or over 50. In Berchtesgadener Land, for example, the incidence on Saturday (July 31, 2021) was 60.4. The rules for retail such as hardware stores:

  • There is no need for negative tests in retail.
  • The restrictions are based on the retail space.
  • With a shop area of less than 800 square meters, it should be 10 square meters per customer. If it is over 800 square meters, it must be 20 square meters.
