New numbers: This is how old the corona intensive care patients are in Germany – an age group particularly affected

0

The corona virus is still keeping Germany in suspense. For the first time, exact statistics about the age of Covid 19 intensive care patients have now been published.

Munich – Corona * usually has a more severe course in old people, this assumption has been true since the beginning of the pandemic. Now, for the first time, there are detailed figures about the age at which the patients with severe corona cases in the intensive care units really are.

The proportion of 30 to 39-year-old corona patients in intensive care units is growing

The intensive care register of the German * Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) is now publishing daily figures for the first time. Most Covid 19 patients (almost one in four – 25.4 percent) are between 50 and 59 years old. The next largest group is that of 60 to 69 year olds (22.3 percent). Overall, almost half (47.7 percent) are between 50 and 69 (figures as of September 9th).

The timelines show that the number of serious illnesses in patients between 60 and 69 years of age has decreased significantly in the last few months. The high was on July 13 at 37 percent. In August, patients aged 50 to 59 were the worst affected for the first time. The number of 30 to 39-year-olds in intensive care has also risen sharply recently. In April this group was still three, now it is 8.3 percent.

Significantly fewer 70 to 79-year-olds due to Corona in the intensive care units

In contrast, very young people can hardly be found in intensive care units. People aged 0 to 17 currently only make up 0.8 percent of all cases; this number has changed to a maximum of two percent in recent months. The 18 to 29 year olds are currently 3.8 percent affected. Overall, however, the proportion of this group increased: in the spring it was usually only one percent.

By contrast, the proportion of the oldest part of the population in intensive care units is shrinking. Here the vaccination seems to be effective, because among the 70 to 79 year olds the proportion fell from 27 to 16.8 percent. For those over 80, it remained relatively constant at seven percent. The amended Infection Protection Act gives the federal states more leeway. Baden-Württemberg is now using this and imposing the strictest corona rules in Germany.
