New school building in Antwerp collapsed: at least three dead

A green school still under construction is collapsing in Antwerp, Belgium. At least three people are killed. Others are missing.

Antwerp (AP) – After the collapse of a primary school under construction in the Belgian port city of Antwerp, two more bodies were recovered on Saturday.

Thus, at least three people died in the accident on Friday afternoon, as reported by the Belga news agency. At least two people were still being searched for in the rubble. Detection dogs and special cranes were in use.

Parts of the new building and scaffolding in the Nieuw Zuid district had collapsed for unknown reasons. A dead person was discovered in the rubble on Friday. Nine people were saved alive. Eight of them were seriously injured. Her condition was stable on Saturday. Another lightly injured person was able to leave the hospital after a few hours. The injured and missing had worked on the construction site.

According to Belga, the construction company responsible said they were doing everything they could to find out what happened. “We’re trying to answer all of the questions, but it’s still too early at the moment.” The Belgian King Philippe expressed his condolences and wishes for wellbeing and announced a visit to the scene of the accident.
