New Zealand MP rides her bike to hospital to give birth

Although they are very rare cases, on occasions we have heard of mothers who, for various reasons, go to the hospital driving themselves and in full labor. But without a doubt, cases like the one we will share are even rarer.

It is about a New Zealand parliamentarian, who went viral when she shared that she had traveled by bicycle to the hospital in full labor, to give birth to her second baby.

Julie Anne Genter is Minister for Women, Transport and the Environment of New Zealand, and the peculiar story of her childbirth, which she went to by bicycle and accompanied by her partner, was shared by herself on her official social networks:

Great news! At 3.04 this morning we welcomed the newest member of our family. I wasn’t really planning on cycling during my labor, but it ended up happening. My contractions weren’t as strong when we left at two in the morning to go to the hospital, although they happened every two or three minutes and increasing in intensity by the end of the 10-minute walk. (I’m smiling in the hospital parking lot right after having one.) Unbelievably, we now have a healthy little girl sleeping, just like her dad.

We feel blessed to have had excellent care and support from a great team, in what turned out to be a quick (and happily hassle-free) delivery.

Although her story has gone viral, in reality it is not the first time that the parliamentarian does something like this: in 2018 she also traveled by bicycle to deliver her first child , although on that occasion the delivery was induced.

In New Zealand, the news was received positively and with good wishes, although without much surprise, as it is one of the countries where it has become quite normal to see the family and maternal side of women in political positions.

As an example, we have Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who three years ago was the first woman to become a mother while running a country and frequently shows her life as a working mother as well.
