Newcastle tours: where to go from Newcastle

Visitors to Newcastle will find a variety of day trips they can embark on.

The best way is probably to travel by car so that you can stop anywhere you want. Rent a car that suits you and if you are not used to driving the Australian way, follow some driving rules and you should be fine.

If you prefer not to drive, there are bus tours available, or you can take the train, where available, and continue from there.

To the west or to the north

Probably a day trip of choice due to its proximity to Newcastle is a tour of the Hunter Valley wine country. Newcastle is, in fact, in the Hunter region and the Valley is less than two hours west-northwest of Newcastle. Take the Pacific Highway from Newcastle and watch for the detour signs to Cessnock or Pokolbin in the heart of the wine country. Get a map of wineries in the area so you know where to go.

Closer to Newcastle is Port Stephens, which should be less than an hour away traveling northeast through Williamstown and Anna Bay to Nelson Bay. There are several cruises you can take in Nelson Bay, such as dolphin cruises or across the water to Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. Or you can simply rest the day on the beaches in the area, or try water skiing or windsurfing.

Further north is Port Macquarie, another vacation destination on the north coast of New South Wales. The area is particularly attractive for lovers of water sports and leisure activities. About two and a half hours by road from Newcastle.

Or south to Sydney

If you prefer to travel south, The Entrance and Terrigal, on the central coast of New South Wales, are just an hour away, or it could take an extra hour and continue to Sydney, and spend a day sightseeing around the city. from The Rocks to the Opera House, through the Royal Botanic Gardens, The Domain, Hyde Park and perhaps even Darling Harbor.

The red Explorer Bus, the best to catch from the Visitor Center at The Rocks, if you are not very familiar with Sydney, is for many a preferred option as it can get off many times at any time. along your route and come back when you’re ready to.
