"No one is with the calves": triumph for Rosendahl

At the Berlinale 2013 she was celebrated as a “shooting star”. Now Saskia Rosendahl inspires in “No one is with the calves”.

Berlin – hopelessness lies like flour dust over everything. The 24-year-old Christian (Saskia Rosendahl) is worn down by the glorified life in the country.

She cannot satisfy her hunger for life between the cowshed and the kitchen. Friend Jan (Rick Okon) may try as hard as he can. The sadness of everyday life has suffocated love. Christine only wants one thing: away, to the big city.

One day the wind power engineer Klaus (Godehard Giese) comes from Hamburg to work in the isolated village for a while. Hope germinates in Christina. Is he her savior? Or is she wrong about the much older and more experienced man? The young woman has to make a decision. But that’s exactly what she finds incredibly difficult. Because she has doubts whether her dreams are realistic.

Young woman in crisis

The film, based on the bestseller of the same name by Alina Herbing, tells Christin’s story as a quiet drama. In her second feature film, the German-Iranian director Sabrina Sarabi has thus succeeded in creating a multifaceted milieu study and the multi-layered portrait of a young woman in a life crisis. Incidentally, it reflects the loss of many post-reunification hopes in East Germany.

Leading actress Saskia Rosendahl (“Fabian or going to the dogs”) inspires with sensitive play. She sensitively draws the character of a woman in her mid-twenties in search of real life. In doing so, she turns the quiet drama into an event.

At the 74th Locarno International Film Festival last August, she was awarded Best Actress in the competition in the “Cineasti del presente” (“Filmmakers of the Present”) section reserved for young directors. dpa
