Stockholm – The Nobel Prize is probably the best-known and most prestigious award in the world. The prize is awarded in five categories every autumn, plus the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics. In contrast to the other five prizes, this prize is not financed from the assets of the Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel, but is donated by the Swedish National Bank.

The Nobel Prizes have been awarded in the categories of physics, chemistry, physiology / medicine, literature and peace efforts since 1901. The prestigious prizes, which have been endowed with 10 million Swedish kronor (around 981,000 euros) per category since 2020, will be awarded on the anniversary of Nobel’s death on December 10th. The Nobel Prize winners are announced earlier, however, during Nobel Week, from Monday to Friday, the winner of each category is named.

Nobel Prizes 2021: Who Will Receive the Nobel Peace Prize? WHO among the favorites

Every year before the Nobel Prize winners are announced, there are rumors, speculations and speculations about who might receive one of the awards. Some betting providers even allow bets on the winners. The Nobel Peace Prize in particular is always at the center of speculation, as this prize is easier to assess for laypeople than the Nobel Prize for medicine, physics or chemistry.

In 2021, parts of the Nobel Prize could be dominated by the corona pandemic. According to reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Covax vaccination program have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The WHO was already the big favorite for the prize last year, but the World Food Program received it. In addition to the WHO, personalities such as Alexej Navalny and Greta Thunberg as well as the organization “Black Lives Matter” are said to be on the not officially published list of nominees.

In recent years, the World Food Program * (2020), the Ethiopian politician Abiy Ahmed * (2019), the international campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons * (2017) and the Colombian politician Juan Manuel Santos * (2016) have received awards. The last German to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize was Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt in 1971.

Nobel Prize 2021: who will receive the Nobel Prize for Literature? Well-known names are mentioned

The Nobel Prize for Literature is the greatest award for authors. On the list of names speculated about in 2021 are such prominent names as Margaret Atwood or Haruki Murakami, who are still missing the award. Unlike the Nobel Prizes in the scientific disciplines, the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded for the “life’s work” of a writer. According to Alfred Nobel, it should be awarded to an “ideally outstanding work”.

In recent years, Louise Glück * (2020), Peter Handke * (2019), Olga Tokarczuk * (2018), Bob Dylan * (2016) and Alice Munro * (2013) have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Authors from Germany have received the Nobel Prize for Literature ten times:

Paul Heyse 1910
Gerhart Hauptmann 1912
Thomas Mann 1929
Hermann Hesse 1946
Nelly Sachs 1966
Heinrich Boell 1972
Günter Grass 1999

Nobel Prizes for Medicine, Physics and Chemistry 2021: Award for mRNA vaccination?

The Nobel Prizes in the scientific disciplines are far more difficult to predict – especially since there is usually no deep insight into the complex subject areas. It is possible that mRNA vaccination could already be awarded a Nobel Prize in medicine or chemistry in 2021. That would mean that Katalin Karikó, who is known as the “mother of mRNA vaccination”, and her colleague Drew Weissman will be honored for their research. The two are behind the mRNA vaccination, since 2013 Karikó has been Senior Vice President at Biontech, the company that developed an mRNA vaccine against the coronavirus * in Mainz.

Derrick Rossi, a co-founder of the company Moderna *, whose mRNA vaccine is also based on Karikó’s and Weissman’s research, is certain that the two should receive the Nobel Prize for their work. Whether it ultimately turns out that way or whether the researchers who made the mRNA vaccines against Corona * possible have to wait a little longer for the award – Nobel Week will show it.

Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics and Medicine: A broad field

The subject areas that have been awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine, chemistry or physics in recent years cover a very large field. For example, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to researchers Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna in 2020 *. The two had developed a method for genome editing (the gene scissors CRISPR / Cas). The year before, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to three researchers for the development of the lithium-ion battery.

Most recently, the Nobel Prize in Physics went to three researchers and their discoveries about black holes – among them the German Reinhard Genzel *. In 2019, a cosmologist and the discoverers of the first exoplanets were awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics. In medicine, the discovery of the hepatitis C virus was honored with a Nobel Prize in 2020; prior to this, the “discovery of molecular mechanisms of oxygen uptake by cells” and the “discovery of a cancer therapy by inhibiting negative immune regulation” were awarded a Nobel Prize in medicine .
