Cities in Norway have a great variety: visitors can enjoy everything from quiet and cozy towns to bustling metropolitan areas full of art and culture. Traveling from one city to another in Norway is easy with various transport options, so you can choose more than one Norwegian city destination for your visit… let’s find out which city in Norway is best for you.

Topping our list of the best cities in Norway for visitors is the picturesque town of Bergen. Bergen is one of the most popular destinations in Norway for good reason, as Bergen is not far from Oslo, has a very picturesque location on the west coast of Norway, and is one of the warmest cities in Norway in winter.

Oslo

The city of Oslo is the capital of Norway, and it should definitely be near (if not at) the top of your list. Here you will find a historic city dating back over a thousand years. Today, Oslo is a European metropolitan area that offers everything to keep a visitor to Norway happy, fed and entertained. You could spend weeks in Oslo without doing the same thing twice!

Trondheim

Did you know that Trondheim was the first capital of Norway? Trondheim is a smaller city than the first two elections, and the quiet historic neighborhoods are reminiscent of old fairy tales. Perhaps it is this type of environment that makes it so special for visitors who want to take it easy and relax a bit more. Trondheim is especially beautiful in late summer and fall. Be sure to enjoy the fresh seafood available here and visit Nidaros Cathedral, the largest church in Northern Europe.

Lillehammer

Here is a city for the active traveler. Just remember that the city of Lillehammer doesn’t just offer skiing! In summer, there is fishing and hiking, the Maihaugen open-air museum, a water park and a pretty pedestrian zone in the center of Lillehammer. In winter, of course, this Norwegian city beats anywhere else, with winter sports, sleigh rides, a winter amusement park, toboggan run, ski jumping, and ice fishing.

Geiranger

Last but not least, I want to make sure to mention the cozy town of Geiranger. Yes, it is quite a tourist destination, but for nature-loving travelers, the beauty of the Geiranger Fjord environment easily surpasses it. If you can’t stay long, consider Geiranger as a 1-2 day trip from one of the largest cities in Norway. This is one of the must-see destinations in Norway.
