The Karachi explosion claims more and more victims. Now the number of deaths has risen to 17.

Islamabad – The death toll rose to 17 following the explosion in the Pakistani port city of Karachi. At least seven other people died of their injuries, said a police spokesman.

At first there was talk of at least ten dead. Another ten injured were treated in hospitals. The authorities initially considered a terrorist attack to be a possible reason for the explosion at a bank building, but ruled this out on Sunday.

The explosion occurred on Saturday in a sewer system in the Sher Shah district. The force had been so great that a private bank building, which had been built over a sewer, was destroyed.

The incident highlighted building code violations in the largest city in the country. There, illegal buildings, especially over sewers, are one of the main reasons for flooding. dpa
