Onset of winter and snow on the first weekend in Advent

Tobogganing or snowball fights – that could be a success on the first advent in the Bergland. But the snow shouldn’t stay long, estimates the German Weather Service.

Offenbach – Just in time for the first Advent on this Sunday, it will be wintry in Germany: The German Weather Service (DWD) expects up to ten centimeters of snow in the western low mountain ranges.

According to the information, it can snow even in the lower elevations – because the snowfall limit is 300 to 400 meters. A DWD meteorologist said on Thursday in Offenbach that “a toboggan run or a snowball fight could even be possible in the mountains”.

The cause of the change in weather are two low pressure areas over Scandinavia and the western Mediterranean. They’ll provide some snow on Friday in the Bavarian Forest and in the Alps. In the night of Saturday, more and more precipitation sets in from the Benelux, which locally ensures smooth roads. “On Saturday, wet and cold dreary weather dominates the weather in many regions,” said the meteorologist.

Because the temperatures are comparatively high, not much of the snow remains. The maximum values on Saturday in the north fluctuate between four and eight degrees, otherwise between zero and four degrees. At night, however, it goes down to minus four degrees. According to the DWD, there is moderate frost in the mountains. dpa
