Onset of winter in Germany: danger of ice – where there is up to 20 centimeters of snow

0

Snow and cold mixed with rain. Winter doesn’t really want to make a decision yet. Snow will fall again in many regions at the weekend.

Kassel – After the surprising snow on Thursday (February 20th, 2022), cold rain will set in in the north on Friday (February 21st, 2022). The rain moves further south and then slowly turns into snowfall there. In the south of Germany, there may even be heavy snowfalls, especially in the low mountain ranges and in the Alps, reports The Weather Channel. The snowfall builds up until Sunday evening.

Of course, this also means that the risk of ice will continue throughout the weekend of January 22nd to 23rd. In the north and center of Germany it can be slippery in the evenings and mornings due to freezing wet conditions, and snow is said to remain on the roads in the south, which can make driving difficult for drivers.

Winter weather at the weekend: In the east only remnants of the fallen snow remain

In the east, and thus also in the capital Berlin, remnants of the snow that has already fallen can remain on the ground until Sunday. According to information from The Weather Channel, it will even remain free of frost and ice on the Rhine and in north-west Germany. Originally, a very cold and snowy winter was expected – much colder than the previous one.

The past winters at a glance:

year Mean daily mean temperature
2020/2021 1.8 degrees Celsius
2019/2020 4.2 degrees Celsius
2018/2019 2.8 degrees Celsius
2017/2018 1.5 degrees Celsius
2016/2017 1 degree centigrade

In the north of the republic and away from the low mountain ranges, snowfall is negligible at the weekend. In the south, on the other hand, a snow cover of up to 20 centimeters can form. But only those who drive to the Alps or to the edge of the Alps experience a real winter wonderland. There should be 20 to 60 centimeters of snow in the valleys on Sunday evening.

From Monday, however, the temperatures will start to rise again. The all-clear is then also given when there is a slippery slope. However, weather models indicate that the weather situation could repeat itself by the end of next week. So it still exists, winter. So far, however, it has only brought little wintry weather and rather mild temperatures*. (Luisa Weckesser) *hna.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
