Ornithologists delete racist names: more than 1000 birds renamed in Germany

In Germany alone, over 1000 birds have already been renamed – many more name changes will follow: Ornithologists ban racist names.

Radolfzell – For some years now, ornithologists have sparked a debate about the names of birds. Many names still come from the times of colonialism or World War II and hide racist ideas. For example the "Hottentot duck" or the "Mohrenlerche", which meanwhile have a more appropriate name with "Pünktchenente" or the "Schwarzsteppenlerche". Over 1000 birds have already been renamed in Germany after allegations of racism *.

The fact that Sweden, for example, scrutinized around 10,000 animals in 2015 and renamed ten species shows how busy ornithologists are trying to ban racism in the animal kingdom.
Numerous birds have already been renamed worldwide – more will follow, 24hamburg.de knows.
