On January 7th, the time has come again and the coveted golden boys will be awarded. The best films for 2021 and Oscar candidates include a musical remake and a sports drama.

Los Angeles – Steven Spielberg’s musical remake “West Side Story”, the science fiction film “Dune” and the deaf drama “Coda” are among the ten best films of 2021 from the point of view of the renowned American Film Institute (AFI).

The sports drama “King Richard”, Joel Coen’s “Macbeth” and “The Power of the Dog” by Jane Campion are among the top candidates, as the association announced.

Other AFI favorites include the disaster satire “Don’t Look Up” (Adam McKay), the romance “Licorice Pizza” (Paul Thomas Anderson), the psychological thriller “Nightmare Alley” (Guillermo del Toro) and the musical Drama “Tick, Tick … Boom!” By Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The annual selection by film experts and critics is regarded as a harbinger for the subsequent Academy Awards. Usually several films from the AFI list make it into the Oscar contenders in the top category “Best Picture”. Last spring, six AFI films were among the eight candidates for “Best Film”, including “Mank”, “Minari” and the subsequent Oscar winner “Nomadland”.

The selected AFI filmmakers are to be honored with an award ceremony in Los Angeles on January 7th. dpa
