Sergio Pérez will own one of the 12 teams that could compete in the E1 championship starting in 2023, and he will do so with the colors of Mexico adorning his RaceBird boat.

In 2010, Checo Pérez was part of Alejandro Agag ‘s Barwa Addax team in GP2 (now Formula 2), achieving five victories (two in the main race and three in the sprint) and second place in the standings, led by Pastor Maldonado. Since then, the Red Bull driver and the Formula E founder have maintained contact.

“I am very excited about the prospect of becoming a new team owner in E1 and having a team that represents Mexico in the UIM E1 world championship,” said Perez.

“Given my relationship with Alejandro, I have closely followed what he has been doing and his various championships, and I think what he has achieved in promoting more sustainable forms of motorsport is commendable.”

“Seeing a racing team flying the Mexican flag on a global stage will be incredible and I’m looking forward to seeing the RaceBird in action for the first time.”

“I have heard a lot of positive stories about the boat and the exciting sports product that E1 is trying to create for the fans with the events in the cities that it will attend.”

“For sure it will be a great challenge in my career and a learning experience. I am looking forward to starting and helping to grow the fan base in Mexico and around the world.”

Agag, who is still the president of Formula E and also created Extreme E, where he is managing director, said: “Checo and I remain close friends since we worked together during our time in GP2, where Checo drove for my team. .

“In a way, it seems that the circle has been closed, since I hired him as a driver and now Sergio has created his own team in E1.”

“Not only is he an incredibly fast and talented race car driver himself, but he is also smart and has all the necessary attributes to become a successful team owner.”

“I am delighted to welcome Checo to the E1 family and look forward to seeing how the plans for Team Mexico unfold.”

Agag has formed E1 with former F1 engineer Rodi Basso , who was Rubens Barrichello’s race engineer at Ferrari during the Scuderia ‘s ultra-successful time between 2000 and 2004 and later went on to work for Red Bull and the Applied Technology division. of McLaren F1.

E1 hopes to pit 12 teams and 24 drivers against each other in a series of races around the world featuring the RaceBird hydrofoil , which can reportedly reach speeds of 92km/h with the additional aim of promoting sustainable technology on the water.

The series will be regulated by the International Motonautical Union (UIM), the world governing body for powerboating, and, much like when Agag established Formula E with the FIA, E1 has an exclusivity agreement for electric racing.
