Philip Morris circular economy is reflected in cigarette butt recycling

Philip Morris Mexico went through another record in environmental matters: it collected, for recycling, more than one million cigarette butts. Not only will it transform them into useful products for daily life, but for every 1,000 pieces of this salvaged waste, a tree will be planted.

It is a circular environmental strategy that the tobacco company has fulfilled hand in hand with World Cleanup Day and Ecofilter. And it takes two steps forward, on World No Cigarette Day, reiterating its commitment to stop producing them in order to replace them – with adequate regulation and the participation of society – with smoke-free products (and without butts) that are less harmful to health, like your IQOS tobacco warmer.

And it is that we must remember that cigarette butts damage the environment, by contaminating the soil and water. To avoid this, Philip Morris Mexico actively promotes their collection in order to transform them into useful objects through innovative recycling technologies.

It achieves the above with the help of Ecofilter, a company that has an advanced biotechnological process where it breaks down cigarette butts to cellulose for its transformation into products such as paper, notebooks, pencils and pots.

Philip Morris International (PMI) is leading the transformation in the tobacco industry to create a smoke-free future, to be achieved by replacing cigarettes with smoke-free products for the benefit of adults who would otherwise continue to smoke.

“At Philip Morris International we are confident that, with the right regulation and the participation of society, we will also be able to replace cigarettes with smoke-free products in the coming years,” added Dabrowski.

At the end of 2021, the company participated in the collection of more than 6.4 million cigarette butts, nationwide, for recycling with Ecofilter. This achievement was celebrated on May 28 at the Monument to the Revolution, where environmental education workshops were held and a temporary art gallery was opened. In addition, a sculpture made entirely of cigarette butts was exhibited, an example of what can be done when these wastes are reused properly.

Under its sustainable vision and also as a commitment to a future without smoke, through multidisciplinary capabilities in product development, state-of-the-art facilities and scientific foundation, Philip Morris International has developed IQOS, the portfolio of products that heat tobacco and they don’t burn it.
