Photographer and filmmaker Roger Fritz died on Friday (November 26th, 2021) at the age of 85.

Munich – The photographer, actor and director Roger Fritz died in Munich at the age of 85. That said his long-time partner Margit Friedrich on Monday evening (29.11.2021) the German Press Agency. Fritz died on Friday (November 26th, 2021) as a result of an aneurysm in the hospital. Several media had previously reported, including the Munich “Abendzeitung” and “Bild”.

Fritz was a great society. He assisted the Italian director Luchino Visconti on “Boccaccio 70” with Romy Schneider. In 1963 he made his first short film “Silent Voices”. His first feature film, “Mädchen, Mädchen” in 1966, was a success. Fritz was also an actor in several films, among others by Rudolf Thome (“Fremde Stadt”, 1972), Sam Peckinpah (“Steiner – Das Eiserne Kreuz”, 1976) and Rainer Werner Fassbinder (“Lili Marleen”, 1981).

He got close to stars like Fassbinder or Romy Schneider. However, he was also looking for other motifs, such as Bavarian customs such as goasslschnalzen (cracking of the whip) or raising the maypole. His repertoire ranged from portraits and landscapes to abstract photography. For a while he was also a restaurateur in Munich.

According to the biography on his website, Fritz first trained as a wholesale merchant. In 1955 he met the photographer Herbert List in Munich and occasionally assisted him. He partly worked for magazines and co-founded the magazine “twen”. In 1961 he studied at the UFA junior school for acting and directing in Berlin. (dpa)
