The legendary Formula 1 circuit of Spa-Francorchamps will undergo a major change this winter. After an investment of 80 million euros, part of the circuit’s facilities will be renovated, and the track itself will also be improved to increase the diversity of activities that it can host.

The management of the Belgian track wants to organize motorcycle races this year, in addition to car races. However, in order to obtain the FIM license, part of the existing layout will first have to be changed.

In an earlier update, the Circuit des Ardennes showed footage of La Source, Bruxelles and Blanchimont before the start of 2022, with asphalt run-offs to be widened and/or replaced with gravel.

The track has revealed footage of Les Combes and Malmedy , the combination of corners at the end of the long Kemmel straight, where the run-off will be increased, safety lanes will be shifted and more gravel will be added. In addition, the service roads behind the tire barriers will be renewed, as we can see in the following photographs.

Spa-Francorchamps also shared new photos of the circuit’s most famous section: the Eau Rouge and Raidillon corners . At the top of Raidillon, they will increase the run-out on the right hand side, while adding extra space on the left hand side of the corner.

Both points have been the subject of debate in recent years after some serious accidents such as the one that cost the life of the Formula 2 driver, Anthoine Hubert. At the bottom of the Eau Rouge hill, the security barrier will shift, also in favor of further escape.

Behind this security zone, a new grandstand complex will be built, offering 4,600 covered seats and several VIP lounges. This grandstand, which will overlook the old boxes, the paddock and the section between La Source and Raidillon, is expected to be completed by the end of April.
