Pietro Fittipaldi, 25, first joined Haas at the end of 2018 and contested two races in 2020 when he replaced Romain Grosjean after his accident in Bahrain. His best finish was 17th at the Sakhir Grand Prix .

Fittipaldi has been present at most of the 2021 grands prix as a Haas reserve driver, supporting Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. The team announced Thursday that it would retain that role next year.

“I am obviously very happy and excited about the opportunity to continue my association with Haas,” said Fittipaldi, who is the grandson of two-time F1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.

“I have been with the team for several seasons and they feel like family. I have learned a lot in my time with them and I hope to continue contributing to the introduction of the new generation of Formula 1 cars in 2022.”

“It’s going to be exciting to see what comes with the new rules package and obviously I’m just as interested as the rest of the team to see what the VF-22 will accomplish on track.”

Haas F1 principal Gunther Steiner called it a “very easy decision” to renew Fittipaldi for next season.

“Pietro knows the inner workings of our team very well after being with us for so long,” said Steiner.

“He showed us last year that he was ready to step up and compete when needed and obviously his presence in the team this year has also brought continuity.”

“We are delighted to continue our relationship and look forward to having him on board with the project again in 2022.”

In parallel to his Haas commitments, Fittipaldi contested three IndyCar races this year with Dale Coyne Racing , including the Indianapolis 500, where he was the fastest qualifying rookie.

Fittipaldi also made his European Le Mans Series debut with G-Drive Racing this year, making a single appearance in Brazilian Stock Cars .
