Prince Harry will publish a memoir promising to tell it all in January, his publisher announced Thursday in the highly anticipated tale of the British monarchy, which will arrive just four months after Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
Entitled Spare ( Sapre: In the shadow in Spanish) the book by Harry, youngest son of King Charles III and fifth in line to the British throne, will be in bookstores on January 10, publisher Penguin Random House said.
The memoir from Harry, who now lives in California with his wife Meghan Markle, comes at a sensitive time.
There has been intense speculation that the prince could lift the veil on life in the palace and offer damaging revelations to the institution , or tone down his blows after Elizabeth’s death as Britain adjusts to its new head of state, the King Charles III.
“We are very excited to announce the extraordinarily personal and emotionally powerful story of Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex,” publisher Penguin Random House tweeted.
On the website created by the publisher to promote the work, it is described as a window into how the prince responded to the death of his mother Diana 25 years ago, and how his life has been affected since then.
With its raw and unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark work full of insights, revelations, introspection and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over pain.
Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997 , when Harry was 15 years old. The United Kingdom was then plunged into a wave of pain that shook the monarchy, which some considered distant from the feelings of the common citizen.
The title of the book alludes to Harry’s status with respect to Prince William, his older brother and heir to the British throne.
Harry and Meghan, a former mixed-race American actress, shocked the world by leaving their royal duties in early 2020 and moving to the United States.
Since then, they have launched a series of criticisms about his life in the royal family, including claims of racism and lack of support from the Crown amid relentless attacks from the British tabloids.
His public questioning exacerbated Harry’s tensions with William, with whom he is reportedly estranged, and with his father.
Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, now live with their two young children, Archie and Lilibet Diana, in Santa Barbara, California.
“ups and downs”
In July last year, Harry announced that he was writing his memoir , in which he said he would expose the “mistakes” and “lessons learned” throughout his life.
“I am writing this not as the prince I was born with, but as the man I have become,” he said then.
“I’ve worn many different hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that by telling my story – the ups and downs, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, We have more in common than we think,” he said in a statement released by the publisher.
He said he was “excited for people to read a first-hand account of my life that is accurate and totally true.”
But any additional unflattering and outspoken comments about the royal family, beyond those Harry made during an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, could backfire after the queen’s death.
“Prince Harry has chickened out on the memoir’s content at various points, publishing industry executives with knowledge of the process told The Times , and the project has been shrouded in rumours, delays and secrecy,” The New newspaper reported. YorkTimes .
