Quartararo: "The direction that Yamaha follows will affect my future"

The world champion will enter his fourth season in MotoGP in 2022 , when his contract with Yamaha will end. Quartararo will be one of the most coveted pieces of a transfer market that will begin to move this winter – if it has not already done so.

In his new status as champion and overall leader of the Iwata brand project, El Diablo wants to mark the evolution of the M1, and has long called for improving Yamaha’s endemic top speed deficit.

Quartararo was already able to test the first version of the 2022 bike last September at the Misano test. There he already said that “he expected more from the new engine.” This Thursday, in the first pre-season tests at the Jerez Circuit, the Frenchman got back on the M1 next year, and the conclusions were not much better.

“We tried a very similar bike to the Misano… well, to be honest, it was the Misano bike. So, we tried that, a new swingarm, some electronics, anti-wheelie. To be honest it was very similar to Misano “said the #20 upset, who finished the day in ninth place, seven tenths off the best time set by Takaaki Nakagami.

“You have to work more to notice an improvement. Still, [there is] something, as you can imagine, the bike is the first step and we hope it will be much better in Sepang”, referring to the first test to be held in February 2022.

Despite the rush of the MotoGP market, the man from Nice has no urgency to sign his next contract and has already announced that he will wait to test the final version of the new bike.

“I think it’s still early. I don’t want to sign anything before Malaysia, at least. I want to see the evolution of our bike. I think it’s normal. I don’t think it’s normal to sign for 2023 without having started 2022, so I think I know what I want. I’ll wait a bit to see how Yamaha goes, especially to see whether or not the new bike evolves in Sepang.”

And Quartararo sends a clear message to Yamaha: if you don’t like what’s out there, you’ll go elsewhere.

“I am asking for very important things. Then, if they don’t show what I ask, at least they try and there is a little improvement, that’s good. But if I see them going in a totally different direction, it could affect my future with Yamaha.” , he riveted.
