Queen Elizabeth II has to cope with a severe loss that has far-reaching consequences. The regent's kingdom has shrunk.

Bridgetown – In her almost 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth II (95) has already experienced some significant moments, and history has now been made in Barbados. The Caribbean state has renounced the British crown.

Queen Elizabeth II was last deposed as head of state a few years ago. In 1992 Mauritius abolished the monarchy, and almost three decades later Barbados followed in its footsteps. In a solemn ceremony, the state declared itself a republic and introduced Sandra Mason (72) as the new head of state in place of the Queen. As governor general, Mason has previously acted as representative of Queen Elizabeth II, and she should be proud of her newly created office of President of Barbados.
