Queen Elizabeth II was last deposed as head of state a few years ago. In 1992 Mauritius abolished the monarchy, and almost three decades later Barbados followed in its footsteps. In a solemn ceremony, the state declared itself a republic and introduced Sandra Mason (72) as the new head of state in place of the Queen. As governor general, Mason has previously acted as representative of Queen Elizabeth II, and she should be proud of her newly created office of President of Barbados.
