The French car manufacturer Renault announced that it is being investigated for an alleged fraud in the anti-pollution controls of diesel engines of old vehicles.

European justice had opened, at the end of 2020, the possibility of investigating in France the manufacturers involved in the scandal known as dieselgate , which in 2015 shook the sector in Germany, and which ended up costing manufacturers billions of dollars.

Volkswagen acknowledged in autumn 2015 that it had equipped 11 million diesel vehicles with a program that could conceal gas emissions, which in some cases exceeded the legal limits 40 times.

The German automaker had to pay more than $ 30 billion in the United States, where it pleaded guilty to fraud.

Renault must, for the moment, pay a bond of about 24 million dollars (20 million euros) and a supplementary bank guarantee of 60 million euros in case of possible compensation, the company said in its statement.

The manufacturer replied, however, "having committed not the slightest infraction" and stressed that "its vehicles are not equipped with fraud programs for decontamination devices."
