Max Verstappen will start the race in a sprint ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, who was one of many drivers to cause a red flag during the hour-long qualifying session due to a large number of interruptions.

The result of Saturday’s sprint race will set the starting grid for Sunday’s feature race. Contrary to last season, the driver who wins the sprint will not receive the accolade of pole position at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The session began with a slightly damp track that quickly dried. After about 12 minutes came the first red flag, caused by Alexander Albon’s Williams when his right rear brake overheated and caught fire, causing an explosion.

Times dropped throughout the session, with Carlos Sainz moving into first place with seven minutes to go with a lap of 1:20.319, 0.03s ahead of Verstappen. Leclerc was the one who took control four minutes from the end with a 1m19.545s, 0.015s quicker than Sainz.

What happened in Q2 at Imola?

More rain threatened at the start of the second round of qualifying, causing almost all the cars still in action to take to the track immediately.

Sainz set the pace at the start with a 1m18.990s, but Verstappen edged him out with a 1m18.793s. The second red flag soon arrived when Sainz lost control of his Ferrari and went into the wall. Lando Norris was third fastest at the wheel of his McLaren, ahead of Sergio Pérez and Leclerc.

The rain fell again during the break, so neither driver could improve. Eliminated at this point were George Russell (Mercedes), Mick Schumacher (Haas), Hamilton, Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin).

What happened in Q3 at Imola?

With Carlos Sainz dropping out of the fight early, nine cars contested the final round of qualifying in wet conditions.

The opening laps, with all the cars on intermediate tyres, were stopped when Kevin Magnussen spun his Haas at Acqua Minerale. Verstappen meanwhile had a short excursion on the grass without consequences.

After the restart, Leclerc set the bar at 1m18.778s, 0.02s quicker than Verstappen.

The Dutchman later moved up to first place with a 1m27.999s, 0.779s quicker than Leclerc, despite being forced to slow down as Valtteri Bottas had stalled in the final sector right in front of him, causing another red flag. Verstappen hit the gravel on his next lap, just as the red flag brought the session to a halt once again.

Q3 resumed with three minutes to go, but rain had returned to the Italian circuit as Bottas’s car was removed.

Thus, Verstappen and Leclerc will start tomorrow from the front row, ahead of Norris (who caused the last red flag at Acqua Minerale with less than a minute to go) and Magnussen who finished fifth.

Alpine’s Fernando Alonso will start the sprint race in fifth place, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), Pérez, Bottas, Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Sainz.
