After going out on the track with the hard tyres, Sainz was the first to set a benchmark on the soft tyres, in 1:19.907. That time looked like it was going to be bettered by Verstappen , who painted the first two sectors purple before running into a slew of traffic towards the end of his lap.

The Dutchman still set a 1m20.164s to move into second, but Leclerc improved his times to a 1m19.828s which saw Ferrari finish with a one-two finish in FP1.

Russell the fastest Mercedes driver, lapping 0.762 seconds off the fastest time in the morning.

Fernando Alonso managed to get the two local heroes to finish in the top five, doing a 1:20.768 lap, just ahead of Hamilton ‘s second Mercedes, who almost had to go off the line when the Spaniard was on one of his cool-down laps.

Alonso was eventually given a reprimand by the FIA stewards.

McLaren and AlphaTauri shared the final top 10 positions, with Lando Norris ahead of Pierre Gasly , Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda .

Robert Kubica got behind the wheel of the Alfa Romeo , finishing with the 13th fastest time, with Nyck de Vries making his Williams debut and overtaking Nicholas Latifi .

What happened in free practice 2 of the 2022 Spanish GP?

The teams used the medium tires at the start of this session, with Verstappen setting the fastest time thanks to his 1m20.932s, 0.046s ahead of Sainz and 0.063s quicker than Leclerc , the latter following a mistake late in his lap.

Sebastian Vettel was the first to set a time on softs in FP2 in his upgraded Aston Martin, which has been the talk of the paddock all day on Friday , setting the bar at 1m20.703s. But that time was soon surpassed by Verstappen (1:20.006).

Sainz beat the Dutchman’s time by 0.016 seconds, before Leclerc moved back into the lead with a time of 1m19.670s.

Russell then fell 0.017 seconds off Leclerc’s fastest time of 1:19.787, while Hamilton couldn’t get closer than two tenths from third.

Alonso finished sixth in FP2, ahead of Sergio Pérez (who was back at the wheel for Red Bull), Vettel , Esteban Ocon ( Alpine ) and Mick Schumacher (Haas).

Sainz and Alex Albon (Williams) had a minor scuffle after the first corner, which the stewards will investigate after the session. Lando Norris and Thai also met on track, going wide at Turn 9.

Valtteri Bottas caused the first red flag of the day when “something snapped” in his Alfa Romeo , forcing him to stop at Turn 1.
