What happened in the FP1 of the French GP 2022 of F1?

Verstappen set a time of 1m34.991s on the soft tires to be fastest from the start of the session, half a second ahead of team-mate Sergio Pérez (who spun at Turn 3, and later he went wide at a chicane) and 0.83 seconds ahead of Leclerc at the halfway point of the session.

Verstappen lowered his time to 1m34.346s , but was overtaken almost immediately by Sainz, who will take a grid penalty after his engine failure at the Austrian GP, thanks to a 1m34.256s .

First place then became a direct fight between Verstappen and Leclerc. The Dutchman set a 1m34.021s , despite the obvious understeer he suffered going over the curbs at the exit of Beausset, where he damaged the edge of the ground.

But Leclerc beat him by 91 thousandths with a 1:33.930 , despite a poor second sector, where he lost two tenths of a second. Sainz remained third, more than three tenths off the lead, ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell, the updated AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly and Pérez.

Nyck de Vries replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in this session and was ninth quickest, half a second behind Russell. Robert Kubica also replaced Valtteri Bottas in Alfa Romeo, falling 0.656s behind team-mate Guanyu Zhou in 19th position.
