After an unforgettable 2021 season, in which Alex Rins suffered an unbearable number of crashes in the race, the Suzuki rider proposed a change in the way he faced this season, approaching the grand prix more calmly and, above all, everything, avoiding taking useless risks.
However, after returning to the track at the Argentine Grand Prix last Sunday, returning to the podium for the first time since the end of August last year, when he was second at Silverstone , Rins has once again recalibrated his objectives, and on a circuit in which he has always gone fast and which they like a lot, he was more ambitious.
“The objectives for this weekend are to go directly to Q2, qualify on the first or second row of the grid and reach the podium in Sunday’s race,” he said in the previous Thursday in Austin.
A ‘target’ that will involve taking risks and that if it doesn’t work out, it can cause a reply from the team.
“From the team they will not make noise if we do not achieve it, but now we have a good level, perhaps I have put a lot of pressure on myself by scoring these three goals, but it is a track that I am very good at, it may happen that we are not going to Q2 due to some problem, but we don’t have to go crazy if we don’t start from the first two rows. But I have set these goals for myself because I think we can achieve them”, explained the Barcelona native.
The progression of Rins this season is being in a clear upward direction. He finished seventh in Qatar, fifth in Indonesia and third in Argentina, which speaks to an improvement on the 2022 GSX-RR.
“Austin Circuit, which has a bit of everything, can be a good test for Suzuki , to see how we are compared to last year at the level of the technical package with the bike,” he said.
For this, the pilots hoped that the resurfacing of the track, as well as the improvements of the surface in the bumpy areas, would be a help.
“How the potholes are and how they affect the riding we won’t know until we get on the bike in the first training session, yesterday I went around the track several times, but no matter how much you walk you can’t see how they are. Last year they were bordering on dangerous , I have also been told that the asphalt has been destroyed a bit again by the Nascar cars (it was run on March 27), while others assure me that it is perfect. So until I go over it with the motorcycle I will not be able to express my opinion,” he settled.
