Sepang. February 4, 2022.- As happened in 2021, the Suzuki team presented itself for the new season without the figure of a team manager to replace Davide Brivio , a figure of capital importance in the team’s successes, embodied with the double crown of 2020, and whose absence has become more noticeable after closing the team a less brilliant last season.
Alex Rins, who was hampered last year by the continuous crashes he suffered in the race, hopes to be able to forget what happened and focuses on improving a GSX-RR that in 2021 became a bit obsolete.
“We will try some new parts, also the rear device. In Jerez they already had a new engine, which gave a little more power on the straight. We want to confirm the sensations we had there in November. We have little things, but not many”, explained Rins in the preview of the pre-season test that takes place this Saturday and Sunday in Sepang.
“The goal is to recover the sensations of 2020. So I rode very fast. I’m going to try to use everything bad from 2021 to learn,” said the Spanish rider.
Rins does not feel that he will be conditioned by what happened last year on a psychological level, and uncovers 2022 starting from scratch and with a clean mind, although he admits that “I have been working on my mental condition since 2018”.
Not without acknowledging, then, that the bar was set very high last year.
“This year I will go race by race. Last year I set my goals too high. In 2021 it was surely not realistic to think about winning the World Cup,” he said.
Another weak point in the Suzuki team is the feeling of emptiness at the helm left by the mark of Davide Brivio as team manager.
“It is very important that someone comes to do this job [of team manager], and it is very important that there is a good relationship. I was happy years ago with Davide because he was a very important figure,” he recalled.
The objectives for this year, looking ahead, will be of a lower profile, although the difficulty of the season will be enormous due to the large number of young drivers who will be in the fight.
“The level in MotoGP is enormous. When I arrived in 2017 there was Marc Márquez, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi; nobody else”.
Suzuki took advantage of the testers test from Monday to Wednesday in Sepang to ride with his test rider Silvain Guintoli .
“I have spoken with Guintoli, but not about the specific pieces, because I don’t want his opinion to condition me,” settled the Catalan.
