The Suzuki rider managed to set the fastest time at the start of the MotoGP Grand Prix of Catalonia, stopping the clock at 1:40.101 in the last part of practice, in which, with used medium tires front and rear, he completed a session of five laps in 1.40. low, half a second faster than his rivals, until Maverick Viñales, in his last lap, closed a lap in 1.40.296 to be the closest to Alex Rins, who had not led a practice session since FP1 in Austin. Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli led the first three quarters of the session with a time of 1.40.695, the third fastest.
The Aleix brothers and Pol Espargaró were fourth and fifth, more than six tenths behind, while Alex Márquez finished seventh ahead of Miguel Oliveira, the first KTM on the time sheet. Joan Mir was ninth and Enea Bastianini closed the top 10, completing the list of drivers who are provisionally classified for Q2.
Johann Zarco with the Pramac Ducati was eleventh and the rookie Raúl Fernández, from Tech3, managed to finish 12th, his best result by far since he debuted this year in Qatar in the premier class.
The newly renewed World Championship leader Fabio Quartararo finished 13th, just ahead of Pecco Bagnaia, the Ducati leader, who overtook Brad Binder and Marco Bezzecchi.
Jack Miller finished 18th with Jorge Martín suffering a further crash at turn 2 and finishing 20th on the time sheet.
Despite the good times of Rins, the best time of the session ended far from the pole record in Barcelona, set in 2021 by Quartararo in 1.38.853.
