Rins: "Raising the age to run the World Cup to 18 doesn't make sense"

Alex Rins finished 15th on the first day of free practice at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, more than 1.6 seconds behind the fastest driver, Jack Miller, which complicates his chances of entering Q2 directly if conditions continue. wet that have reigned in this start of the weekend.

“It has been a day with ups and downs. In FP1 it was very difficult for us to find the feeling to get out of the corners and in FP2, without changing anything, I felt much better. But with the last rubber, a new tire, I have not improved the time that I did with the rubber with 28 laps. We have to investigate it, but I think that tomorrow we can improve the times”, summed up the man from Suzuki .

A situation that complicates the weekend and that has caught Rins by surprise.

“I honestly didn’t expect to be so far behind, two tenths from the top 10. It’s been a bit complicated for me, but tomorrow we have options to enter if it doesn’t rain, as the forecasts say. But if we don’t qualify we have enough experience coming from behind”, he added.

Finally, Rins was asked about the package of measures that the FIM and Dorna will implement to improve safety in the races, among which it stands out that from 2023 only 18-year-olds will be able to access the World Championship.

“It is a difficult decision to make, reducing the number of people in the races is very correct, as well as most of the measures that are going to be adopted, but raising the minimum age does not make sense. You have to look for alternatives, such as raising the top three or five of the base categories, but raising the age doesn’t make sense. There are more mature pilots with 16 than with 18 years. In the end, age is just a number”, the Catalan disagreed.
