The corona incidence continues to rise sharply. Doctors’ representatives are calling for quick action to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed.

Frankfurt – According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the corona incidence on Wednesday (October 12) was 799 and an end to the increase is initially not foreseeable. Clinics in Germany are already preparing for a new wave and experts are warning of renewed overload and a sharp increase in Covid patients in hospitals.

In view of the increasing number of corona infections, medical representatives are now calling on the federal states to act quickly. “Wherever the incidences are now going through the roof, the federal states must react with an FFP2 mask requirement in public transport and in publicly accessible indoor areas,” demands Susanne Johna, chairwoman of the Marburger Bund doctors’ union.

The sharp increase in corona infections could otherwise overload the clinics. “Even if it’s annoying: FFP2 masks protect against the transmission of airborne infectious diseases,” said Johna. “We do not have a similarly fast-acting protection available for other cases of illness.”

Lauterbach advocates the return of the mask requirement as a measure against Corona

Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) is also demanding that measures be taken to prevent the spread of Corona again. He thinks a return to wearing masks indoors makes sense.

Each federal state decides independently on corona measures that are independent of the federal government. Lauterbach is therefore calling on the federal states to proceed as uniformly as possible. “If the countries could now agree on when the optimal time is, that would of course be great,” he told the ARD morning magazine . The Minister of Health also said that it was not the attitude of the federal government to get used to the rising death toll.

Corona wave: staff shortages in the hospital – return of the mask requirement demanded

More patients with Covid-19 also mean a higher risk of infection for employees in the hospital – the higher protection against infection that is therefore necessary also means a significant additional effort. Due to the increasing incidences, staff shortages are already expected in the hospitals. Many clinics are already poorly staffed. Johna made the following comments to the Funke media group: “Politicians continue to underestimate the staff shortages in supply,” she warns. “We want to provide good care for all patients, but more and more staff are also falling ill in the hospitals.” (Kilian Bäuml/AFP)
