RKI confirms: First Omikron death in Germany – age range known

In Germany there is the first death after a corona infection with the Omikron variant. This was confirmed by the RKI.

Munich – Germany has the first death after infection with the Omikron * variant of the Corona * virus. This was announced by the RKI. The deceased is a person between the ages of 60 and 79.

According to the current status, the RKI in Germany has so far assigned a total of 3198 corona infections to the new Omikron variant. “This corresponds to an increase in cases of 25% (+ 810 cases) compared to the previous day,” wrote the RKI on Thursday about the development of these numbers.

First Omikron death in Germany

Only cases are counted in which an omicron detection via genome sequencing or a laboratory diagnostic suspicion by means of variant-specific PCR was carried out.

Graded according to age group, most Omikron infections are currently in the 15 to 34-year-old group. Here the RKI records 1501 infected people with the variant. Of these, twelve had to be hospitalized. 34 of these infections were re-infected.

Omikron in Germany: RKI report shows cases by age and federal state

In its report of December 23, with data from December 22, the RKI now confirms the first death among 60 to 79-year-olds after an Omicron infection. In total, there were 256 infections with the mutant in this age group, 13 of which led to hospitalization.

The RKI also makes a comparison by federal state. Accordingly, one currently has the most Omicron evidence or suspected PCR cases in North Rhine-Westphalia with 1108. This is followed by Bavaria (595) and Hamburg (458). The Saarland is at the bottom of this table with two cases.
