The RKI reports more than 160,000 new infections on Wednesday. NRW Prime Minister meanwhile sees a turning point in the pandemic.
+++ 11.00 a.m .: North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst sees the corona pandemic in Germany before a possible turning point. “We are in a phase of upheaval in the pandemic,” said Wüst on Wednesday in the state parliament in Düsseldorf. People now need perspectives for a “gradual return to normality”. The head of government demanded that the previous protective measures should be scaled back at the moment when the health system could be ruled out.
Wüst said that given the increasing number of infections, there is still time for “mindfulness and decisive action”. In the coming weeks, however, you have to think in both directions – both in the direction of protective measures and in the direction of opening perspectives.
First report from Wednesday, January 26th, 2022, 6 a.m.: Frankfurt – For the first time in the corona pandemic, more than 150,000 new infections were transmitted to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. According to the RKI, the health authorities reported 164,000 cases in 24 hours on Wednesday morning (January 26, 2022).
On January 19, the number had exceeded 100,000 for the first time. A week ago there were 112,323 new infections recorded. The RKI has counted 9,035,795 infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.
The seven-day incidence exceeded the threshold of 900 for the first time: the RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week as 940.6. For comparison: On Tuesday the corona value was 894.3. A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 584.4 (previous month: 220.7). This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m.

The case numbers of the RKI may differ from those of the individual federal states. One reason for this is the longer transmission paths between the RKI and the responsible health authorities. The RKI’s Covid-19 dashboard can also be adjusted during the day.
Corona case numbers in Germany: RKI reports 166 deaths
Experts assume that there will be a high and increasing number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data, partly because testing capacities and health authorities are at their limits in many places. Due to the increasing number of cases, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) only expects the corona measures to be relaxed after the omicron wave has been exceeded.
According to the new information, 166 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 239 deaths. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 117,126. The RKI gave the number of recovered people on Wednesday morning as 7,387,800.
The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 4.07 (Monday 3.87) by the RKI on Tuesday. (jey with AFP/dpa)
