Russell surprises by stealing pole position from Sainz in Hungary: Verstappen KO

0

After all the forecasts spoke of qualifying in the wet and Saturday’s FP3 was in the rain, the session that decided the starting order for Sunday was held entirely in the dry and even so it was crazy.

The first two rounds left Max Verstappen the favorite for pole, but the Dutchman made a mistake on his first attempt at Q3. And then, in the final attempt, he suffered power problems that left him without a chance to fight, in tenth position.

Carlos Sainz set a great lap that left him on provisional pole after the first attack, with Russell second, Charles Leclerc third and Lewis Hamilton fourth. However, there was still one lap to go, and although the Madrid native improved and overtook his teammate, George Russell marveled to take his first pole position by just 44 thousandths (0.044s).

The Englishman, who had not been the fastest in any of the three sectors, gave the first place in qualifying for Mercedes in this 2022 season, although he will have to defend himself against the two Ferraris, who start right behind him. Carlos Sainz beat Leclerc in the internal duel, and the Cavallino will have to take advantage of the fact that they start well ahead of their rivals.

Sergio Pérez fell in Q2 for the third time this season and will have to start eleventh. The Mexican had his first lap erased in that round, traffic was found in the second and in the last minutes Red Bull left him in the box while his rivals improved.

In the second row alongside Leclerc will start Lando Norris, who confirmed the improvement of McLaren this weekend, while the third row will be completely blue, with Esteban Ocon ahead of Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton will start eighth after being eight tenths behind his teammate, and between him and Verstappen will start Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo, which leaves up to six teams in the points zone… at least at the start.

This was the Q1 of the Hungarian GP classification

With all eyes on the sky, but no rain, Hungary’s qualifying got underway, and several cars started as soon as the green light came on. Kevin Magnussen led the little train that formed, and little by little the rest joined, the Ferraris being the last to do so, although there were still 13 minutes left.

Mick Schumacher had his first lap invalidated for breaking the limits at Turn 4, remembering that threat was there. Verstappen took the lead and then dropped with a 1m18.792s that no one, not even the Ferraris, came within three tenths of. Norris slipped between the Red Bulls, closing within two tenths of Norris, and Hamilton fell just one.

Verstappen lowered his mark further, and Sainz was about to match him, remaining at 52 thousandths (0.052s). There were only a few minutes left and things were very even in the last positions. The favorites put a game of used for their second attempt, while everything was decided behind.

Finally between the last driver who went to Q2 (Stroll, 15th) and the 18th (Vettel) there were only 68 thousandths. In addition to the German, Yuki Tsunoda, Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly and Nicholas Latifi also fell.

This was the Q2 of the Hungarian GP classification

The second round started with the surprise that several cars came out with a set of used tires. Verstappen, with new ones, set the best time of the weekend, a 1:17.703, and Alonso surprised with a great time that left him second, just two tenths behind the champion and also below 1:18.

With used tires, the Ferraris were only seventh and ninth, risking a second attempt. Pérez had the time of his first lap erased, which left him last, without a record, with five minutes to go. Already with new ones, Leclerc was 65 thousandths behind Verstappen, and Sainz two and a half tenths, behind Alonso.

Pérez warned of some drops in the circuit, and his time only allowed him to be ninth with two minutes to go. At that time, Ocon, Bottas, Magnussen, Stroll and Mick Schumacher were virtually eliminated. Ocon and Bottas improved, which caused Checo Pérez to be eliminated, who, surprisingly, was in the box. In addition to the Mexican, Guanyu Zhou, Kevin Magnussen, Lance Stroll and Mick Schumacher also fell in Q2.
