Sainz: "I've been preparing for my first victory for a long time"

Carlos Sainz signed for Ferrari in 2020 with the clear objective of continuing to grow as a driver in the highest category of motorsport and with the dream of achieving his first victory, even with the achievement of the world title in the future.

In his first year as a member of the Maranello team, the man from Madrid was able to get on the podium four times, although victory eluded him on all of them. The Spaniard took fifth position in the general classification at the end of 2021, beating his teammate Charles Leclerc and proclaiming himself the best of the rest, only behind the two Red Bulls and the Mercedes.

This season, Sainz has climbed to the podium in both races, but has not been able to overtake the Monegasque, who won in Bahrain in Ferrari’s first one-two since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.

The 27-year-old, however, is confident that this first time will come: “I would like to get a victory, and the rest, we’ll see. I’m still chasing my dream in Formula 1, which is to win the first race, obviously, and then a championship”.

“Although to win a title you have to win a race,” Sainz revealed. “I’m going to go after that, I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but every morning or when I go to bed, it’s in my head every day, so I want it to happen.”

In 2019 he was about to climb to the top of the podium at the Italian Grand Prix, but Pierre Gasly won with the AlphaTauri after benefiting from a red flag, so the Spaniard could only be second in a bittersweet outcome.

“I have been preparing for my first victory for a long time. To win a world championship you need consistent wins and podium finishes, and in recent years, I have shown, and convinced myself, that every time I have had the opportunity to achieve a podium I have achieved it,” he said.

“I have had the opportunity to win once or twice, and I have almost achieved it. So I am confident, if they give me the right car, I think I can be there,” settled Carlos Sainz , who in 2022 has a car worthy of achieving victories and fight for the championship until the end.
