The sale of second-hand or used mobile phones saved the emission of a total of 4,659 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere during 2020, one of the sectors that, along with desktop and laptop computers, contributed the most to the reduction of contamination.

This is concluded by the study ‘The Environmental Effect of Second Hand 2020’, developed by Milanuncios in collaboration with the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) and the specialist environmental consultancy Ethos International, which has analyzed the effects on emissions of the reuse of products of all kinds, including electronic ones.

The sale of second-hand iPhones alone accounted for 1,382 tons of CO2 savings for the environment. Other notable brands were Samsung (1,081 tons), Alcatel (833 tons) and Huawei (459 tons), while the entire market for smart watches or ‘smartwatches’ accounted for 408 tons of CO2 less.

The IT sector saved a total of 14,045 tons of air pollution in 2020, with the sale of desktop computers (5,947 tons of CO2) and laptops (5,198 tons) as star products in the category.

Apple computers also enjoy their own category, with 625 tons of CO2 savings, thus becoming the fourth most important product in this section.

In the rest of the technological categories, such as image and sound, the star products were photocopiers (30 tons of CO2) and LED televisions (305 tons of CO2). As for video games, the product that contributed the most were video consoles, with 64 tons of CO2 saved in all of 2020.
