The Anacostia Riverwalk is a new multi-use trail along the east and west banks of the Anacostia River that stretches from Prince George’s County, Maryland to the Tidal Basin and the National Mall in Washington, DC. The project is estimated to cost more than $ 50 million. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is one of a series of transportation, environmental, economic, community and recreation projects included in the largest Anacostia Waterfront Initiative in the District of Columbia. From the Tidal Basin to the city’s northeast border with Maryland, the 30-year, $ 10 billion plan is transforming the banks of the Anacostia River into a front-line waterfront destination.

The trail will eventually stretch for 20 miles from the city to the suburbs. A popular stretch of the trail runs from Nationals Park to the Washington Navy Yard. Over 12 miles of the trail is already open and heavily used. Construction on the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens segment of the Riverwalk Trail opened in October 2016. This portion runs from Benning Road NE to Bladensburg Trail in Maryland. Other segments to complete the Riverwalk Trail will be built as part of the Buzzard Point Trail Project, the South Capitol Street Trail Project, and various partner development projects along Maryland and Virginia avenues SE Washington DC.

In Maryland, the trail will join more than 40 miles of trails that run through the Anacostia River Tax System and connect to numerous Metro and MARC schools, businesses, libraries, museums, shopping centers, and transit stations. When the Anacostia ride is complete, residents and visitors will be able to walk and bike the trail to the following popular destinations:

  • The Fish Pier
  • National Park – Baseball Stadium
  • Poplar point
  • Washington Navy Yard
  • RFK Stadium
  • Kingman island
  • National Arboretum
